Sage Management LLC - Holiday Safety Tips for Apartment Residents

When the holiday season approaches, decorating the home is among the visible things residents do to get in the festive spirit. While decorations help to add to the cheer, they also bring a safety risk to residents. Apartment communities and their tenants can benefit from following the tips provided by Sage Management LLC, a property management firm that owns and manages over 900 units in Baltimore and Washington DC.

Sage Management LLC Christmas trees
  • Keep the tree outdoor with the trunk covered in snow or immersed in water until you it’s time to decorate it.
  • When deciding where to place the tree, have it at least three to five feet away from any heat source.
  • Cut off a 1 to 2-inch diagonal at the bottom of the trunk to provide the tree with a new cut to absorb water, which helps it stay fresh.
  • Don’t keep a dried tree in your home as it is flammable.
Holiday lights
  • Don’t mix and match holiday lights. Let outdoor lights be kept outside, and indoor lights installed inside.
  • Always read through manufacturer’s instructions when installing lights and electrical decorations.
  • Inspect all new and used light strings before installing. Don’t use any that appear worn out or damaged.
  • Before you leave the house or go to bed, unplug all lights and decorations inside and outside the home.
  • Three sets of lights are the maximum an extension cord can have connected to it.
Candles
  • Always use stable candle holders for all candles used.
  • Keep any lit candles away from the Christmas tree, flammable objects, and children’s reach.
